Many moons ago (I don’t really know what that means, but always like the way it sounded) I was able to undo one of the most gratifying mistakes in my life: moving to Los Angeles.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure for many people Los Angeles has great benefits. It’s close to the ocean, the weather hardly changes, it’s the entertainment hub for the country, etc. etc. etc. Heck, I went to Southern California to fulfill a dream of mine, just as many other people do as well. For a brief while I even got to live that dream, even though it was in a radio studio that was set up in a double-wide portable trailer and was in the only trailer park I’ve ever seen built inside of a warehouse (which reminds me, I really should write more about that entire experience now that it is far enough behind me not to open the old wounds). Other then that, however, I mostly view my time in Southern California as one of the larger mistakes I’ve ever made that lead to one of the greatest achievements I’ve ever experienced by becoming a father to my wonderful daughter and mentor, Emily. As a matter of fact, she was the spark that ignited the fire in us to move.

We had just gotten back from driving up to Northern California for a family visit, the nature of which I can’t even remember now, and the entire time we were able to see our daughter get to know and enjoy being with her extended family. It was during this trip that I realized that, because of our distance from loved ones, we were denying our daughter a very beneficial part of her life. It was after this trip that, while sitting in our Southern California home, I turned to my wife and said, “Let’s put the house on the market and get the hell out of here.” After some discussion we decided we would do just that. The next day I was about to start looking for realtors when I received a phone call regarding a job offer, which just happened to be in San Francisco. The universe truly does work in mysterious ways.

So I tell all of this to you, Internet Reader, because I have to say that one of the things that I have never expected to have happen is occuring this very Friday. I will be loading as many of my Earthly possessions into one of these:

… and will finally be closing the door on my life in Southern California. Yes, that is a horse trailer you are looking at. A damn big one as a matter of fact. It belongs to my brother-in-law, will save me a ton in moving costs, and makes me giggle to think every time that I’m putting all of my important stuff into a 20′ horse trailer to return to “normal livin”.
